A Grade 6 pupil hopes to continue equipping the less fortunate with the necessary stationery items they need to excel in school.
Logan Venter, 12, is raising funds and sponsoring disadvantaged youth with pens, pencils and exam pads in areas such as, Hangberg and Langa, with the money he received for his birthday last month.
He attends Wynberg Boys Junior School.
He’s currently raising funds to buy more stationery so that he can help more communities says his mother, Melanie Venter.
“He decided to take his birthday money and began asking around in the community for donations/contributions so he could start collecting stationery and create some packets filled with sweets. He is also collecting funds to donate more of these items for the feeding schemes in Langa,” she said.
Logan says he was inspired to start the drive after seeing the inequality and lack of writing materials in the poorer communities.
“Ever since my younger years when I’d see the poorer community kids at Ziyaad’s Skate Park, it made me realise I should be grateful for what I have and I decided I wanted all the kids to have an equal chance. I believe this can be a reality with the youth helping youth, one step at a time,” he said.
Logan is no stranger to acts of charity. Last year he and is friends along with Ziyaad’s Skate School in Hout Bay, organised a free lunch where 80 children from Hangberg and Imizamo Yethu were givena meal and cupcakes.
Logan also hopes to donate stationery and sweets to the kids at Ziyaad Skate school in two weeks time.
