Ocean View library is bringing creativity to the community with free art classes every Thursday at 1pm.

Presented by Wytske van der Meulen from the Peter Clarke Art Centre in Rondebosch, these sessions offer a welcoming space for children to explore their artistic potential, says librarian Fatima Kiel.

The Peter Clarke Art Centre, named after the renowned Ocean View-born artist Peter Clarke, is dedicated to fostering creative education. Mr Clarke, known for his vivid depictions of South African life, left behind a legacy of artistic excellence that continues to inspire artists and teachers.

Ms Kiel said the art education sessions have many aims and objectives, all of which contribute to the growth and development of the participants.

“We want to nurture creativity, critical thinking, and self-expression while also fostering cultural awareness and appreciation for art in all its forms,” she said.

The art sessions, she said, serve multiple purposes beyond simply teaching artistic techniques. They help students develop the ability to express themselves creatively, appreciate the beauty of art, and understand its cultural and social context.

She said art is not only a form of self-expression but also a tool for problem-solving, confidence-building, and enhancing social skills.

The library’s main goal is to enable children to explore, clarify, and express ideas, ultimately helping them unlock their natural abilities and potential, she said.

She said the classes also focus on self-esteem, appreciation for diverse art forms, developing a creative attitude, and providing an environment where children can express their thoughts and emotions freely.
