THE NORTHERN Cape South African Police Service (SAPS) took a proactive step in addressing bullying and cyberbullying by engaging with approximately 150 Grade 8 pupils from a high school in Douglas.
Members of the Kimberley SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit, Warrant Officer Shaniela Antonie and Constable Harris Witbooi, led the discussions on February 13, emphasising the growing concerns surrounding bullying in schools. They educated the pupils on the different types of bullying, the impact of cyberbullying, and the consequences of sexual offences.
Adding further insight, the SAPS Provincial Forensic Social Worker commander, Colonel Lezelda Raymond, highlighted critical topics such as teenage pregnancy, self-care, emotional well-being, and general safety tips to help learners navigate social challenges.
Sergeant Anton Baartman from Douglas SAPS Social Crime Prevention and Dineo Speak from the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) addressed the criminal implications of bullying. They explained that engaging in bullying behaviour can have legal consequences that may severely affect a young person’s future.
The event also saw contributions from the Sarag NGO and volunteers from the Department of Transport, Safety, and Liaison. These organisations delivered motivational messages and pledged their support in assisting Saps initiatives to combat bullying in schools and local communities.
In a firm message to pupils, SAPS officials cautioned against criminal behaviour, stressing how involvement in illegal activities can limit future opportunities.
The SAPS also reaffirmed its commitment to ongoing awareness campaigns and information-sharing efforts aimed at supporting and empowering victims of bullying while working towards the eradication of such behaviour in schools and society at large.
