The Welcome Glen Community Voluntary Association (WGCVA) will host a potjiekos competition on Saturday March 29, to raise funds for the conversion of the Welcome Glen Farmhouse into a community space and centre.
The WGCVA is leading the initiative, while the National Heritage Council is currently renovating the Farmhouse and WGCVA is preparing to take on the lease once renovations are completed.
WGCVA chairman, Conway Lotter said the farmhouse will serve as a venue for local organisations, including the Community Policing Forum, Neighbourhood Watch, environmental clubs, and book swaps. It will also be available for free community events and as an emergency hub for first responders during incidents such as fires or floods.

The potjiekos competition, now in its fourth year, will take place at the park next to the farmhouse in Glen Oak Road. Fires will be lit at 9am, and the judges will put their taste buds to the test at 12.45pm. Teams will compete for the title of 2025 Welcome Glen Potjie Competition Champions.
WGCVA treasurer Clare James said there will also be a moment of silence for Manu Choudree, who died on Friday, March 21. Mr Choudree had been one of the first judges four years ago and had always supported the initiative.
“This one is for you, Manu,” she said.
Mr Lotter said the event will feature traders, entertainment, and children’s activities such as a treasure hunt, colouring-in competition, and sack race. Food stalls will offer breakfast, cakes, puddings, pancakes, snacks, hot meals, and drinks throughout the day.
Local artists will provide entertainment, and each competing team will have an anthem played at intervals.
“Community spaces are the bedrock of a thriving society. They are where connections are made, cultures are celebrated, and well-being is nurtured. By investing in these spaces, we invest in the future of our communities”, said Mr Lotter.
He described the Welcome Glen Farmhouse as a “friendly neighbourhood living room,” providing a place where people can gather, connect, and contribute to a better future.
Organisers are seeking sponsors for ingredients, prizes, and other event needs. Stall applications are open, and teams of up to six people can enter the competition for R200. Teams must provide their own ingredients, but sponsored pots are available for local organisations.
