Youth from the Izivunguvungu MSC music group performed at Jupiter Primary School in Ocean View on Friday, June 13, as part of Youth Day and Youth Month activities.

The official theme for Youth Month is 'Skills for a Changing World', and Commander Mike Oldham, founder of the Izivunguvungu projects, has long promoted skills development through the reading and performing of music.

“Music and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) are closely linked,” said Commander Oldham.

“Learning an instrument can boost focus and discipline - qualities that help students excel at university and in their careers.”

His projects have produced many success stories, such as a former flute student who went on to study medicine at Stellenbosch University, another who studied accounting at a TVET College, and a recent student who gained admission to UCT.

Many of these students, he said, continued playing music as a creative outlet while completing intense studies.

More than 200 students participate in Izivunguvungu’s music groups, which are now preparing for upcoming public concerts. For more information on the Izivunguvungu projects or how to join, contact Commander Oldham at denmike@iafrica.com
