Shoppers and community members are gathering at Longbeach Mall this week to take part in a special Mandela Day initiative, Beanies for Babies – Knit with Love.

The event, held in partnership with 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day, runs until Thursday, July 18. It takes place from 10am to 4pm daily in the Centre Court.

The campaign invites visitors to spend at least 67 minutes knitting a beanie, which will be donated to newborns in the natal and maternity wards of a local hospital. All wool and needles are provided, and no prior experience is needed.

Families, friends, and even first-time knitters have already responded with enthusiasm, joining together to knit side by side in honour of Nelson Mandela’s legacy.

Olivia Cammell, marketing coordinator of Longbeach Mall, said the aim is not only to provide warmth for babies in need, but to encourage compassion, connection and community action.

“This isn’t just about knitting, it’s about connection, compassion, and carrying forward Madiba’s legacy through hands-on action,” she said.

“Whether you’re an expert or have never held a pair of needles, you’re welcome to join.”

Ms Cammell said giving back to the community is one of the mall’s core values.

“We believe that generosity is a natural and essential part of being human, and we’re proud to be able to share our space and time in service of the community,” she said.

“The response has been incredibly heartwarming—many community members began knitting and donating beanies even before we asked. It’s never just about attending an event; it’s about actively participating and giving more than what’s asked, and we’re deeply grateful for that.”

She added that the Beanies for Babies campaign was chosen this year because of the cold winter and the many talented knitters in the area.

“This initiative offers a meaningful and creative way for people to contribute to Mandela Day. Our hope is that it not only provides warmth and comfort to the little ones who receive the beanies but also brings joy and connection to those who take part in making them.”
