The Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) has launched a campaign urging South Africans to mark Heritage Month by donating blood and helping save lives.
The initiative, themed “Giving Is in My Blood: Make blood donation part of your heritage”, highlights the life-saving role of blood donation and encourages people to make giving part of their identity.
“As we celebrate our diverse heritage, we encourage everyone to make giving part of their identity. There is no substitute for blood; it’s a selfless act that saves lives and supports families,” said WCBS public relations manager Marike Carli.
During September and October, donors will receive a branded water bottle in recognition of their contribution. Through the WCBS Extra Drop initiative, donors may also opt to forgo the gift and instead have WCBS donate R15 on their behalf to the South African Bone Marrow Registry (SABMR), which facilitates life-saving bone marrow transplants.
In a statement, WCBS thanked members of the public who donated during the winter months, helping maintain stable blood stock levels, and has called on donors to continue their support as spring begins.
Eligible donors must be between 16 and 75 years old, weigh 50kg or more, be in good health, and lead a safe sexual lifestyle. Blood donation takes about 30 minutes and can be repeated every 56 days.
