Fish Hoek Bowling Club is suiting up for a Guinness World Record attempt this month as part of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.

On Saturday, September 27, at 2pm, bowling clubs across the Western Cape will take part in a filmed attempt to set a new record for the most people playing lawn bowls simultaneously while wearing a tie or bow tie.

Members of the public, whether they are seasoned bowlers or complete beginners, are invited to join the Fish Hoek club for the event.

A R50 badge, sold as part of the "Suit Up September" campaign, will contribute towards raising awareness and funds for prostate cancer.

“Everyone knows someone who has been touched by this disease,” the club said.

“Your purchase of a badge is your contribution to this worthwhile cause, while at the same time having some fun rolling a few bowls while wearing a tie or bow tie.”

Lynne Moss of the Fish Hoek Bowling Club explained that the record will be verified through the strict procedures of Guinness World Records.

“The attempt will be live-streamed simultaneously from all the clubs in the Western Cape, and scorecards with players’ names and scores must be signed with the start and finish time of the six ends to be played,” she said.

“This is then submitted to Guinness World Records for verification.”

Registration on the day opens at 1.30pm at the Fish Hoek Bowling Club.

Participants are asked to wear a white shirt or T-shirt, flat-soled shoes (or go barefoot), and, of course, a tie or bow tie.

Bowls and instruction will be provided for newcomers.

This is not the first Guinness challenge the club has been involved in.

Fish Hoek was also the starting point for bowler Jonathan Cochrane, 47, of Table View, who successfully set a new Guinness World Record for the most lawn bowls clubs played in 24 hours.

Mr Cochrane began his journey at Fish Hoek at 4 am and went on to play at ten clubs across Cape Town, surpassing the existing record of eight set in the UK.

He travelled only on foot and by public transport, stopping at clubs in Bergvliet, Meadowridge, Plumstead, the Western Province Cricket Club, The Glen, Fresnaye, Sunningdale, Milnerton and finally Edgemead, his home club. At each stop, he played five ends before moving on.

Strict conditions applied to his attempt, with each game requiring an umpire, marker, two witnesses and an opponent. Every match was live-streamed, and Mr Cochrane wore a GPS watch to log his progress.
