Longbeach Mall has launched a three-phase sustainability campaign that combines art, community action, and environmental awareness.

The campaign includes an Earth Art Exhibition, a community beach clean-up, and creative workshops that transform recycled materials into festive decorations.

Until Tuesday, September 30, shoppers can view the Earth Art Exhibition, which has turned the mall into an “eco-artistic sanctuary.”

A key attraction is a giant octopus sculpture made entirely from recycled materials. The piece has drawn strong attention, with organisers saying it has been photographed more times than the penguins at Boulders Beach.

Curator and organiser Irene Oxley, who believes in “bringing art to the people,” said more than 40 artists are participating, with over 300 artworks on display.

She added that the exhibition is linked to Greenpeace and highlights the issue of plastic pollution in the oceans. Greenpeace representatives are also at the mall to speak with visitors about how they can help protect marine life.

Longbeach Mall marketing manager Minnin du Preez said the campaign aims to celebrate creativity, community, and environmental care.

“At the heart of our campaign is the belief that art can ignite awareness and inspire change,” she said.

The campaign extends beyond the exhibition. On Saturday, October 4, from 9am to 11am, residents are invited to take part in a community beach clean-up at Fish Hoek Beach.

From Wednesday, October 8, to Saturday, October 11, workshops will run at the mall between 10.30am and 2pm, where participants can learn how to turn recycled materials into Christmas decorations. Bookings can be made by emailing olivia@x-potential.co.za.

“This campaign is more than a series of events; it’s a call to action,” said Ms Du Preez.

“We encourage everyone to take part, celebrate artistic expression, and contribute to a sustainable future.”
