The Two Oceans Aquarium will host a community beach clean-up at Sunrise Beach, Muizenberg, on Saturday, September 20, to mark World Cleanup Day.

The cleanup, known as Trash Bash, will run from 9am to 11am in partnership with Visions for Change SA.

This year’s event is dedicated to legendary ocean advocate Sylvia Earle, who celebrates her 90th birthday.

The Aquarium’s conservation and sustainability manager, Helen Lockhart, said,  “Beach clean-ups are vital as they prevent plastic and other trash from being deposited into the ocean and beyond our shores. They are also an opportunity to connect with nature.”

Participants are asked to bring weather-appropriate clothing, water in a reusable bottle, reusable gloves and a bucket.

Prizes from the Aquarium and its partners will be up for grabs in a lucky draw.

World Clean-up Day began in Estonia in 2008 and has since grown into a global movement against plastic pollution. Sunrise Beach was chosen as this year’s Cape Town site because it lies within the False Bay Hope Spot, a conservation area championed by Mission Blue, the organisation founded by Sylvia Earle.

The Aquarium, co-champion of the Hope Spot with Cape RADD, says cleanups like this form part of a broader daily effort to reduce plastic use.
