American music legend Johnny Cash will be celebrated in a tribute show, Sin and Salvation - The Story of Johnny Cash, at Groot Constantia on Friday, October 17.
Sin and Salvation – The Story of Johnny Cash delves into the character of one of the most charismatic and controversial artists in American music.
Born into a God-fearing, cotton-farming family during the Great Depression, Johnny Cash went from being a country singer to an artist who embraced all cultures in the USA, wearing black as a symbol of his compassion for the downtrodden, particularly the Native Americans, with whom he identified.
However, his demons frequently led him down paths of self-destruction and brushes with the law, fuelled by drugs and alcohol. His legendary concerts in Folsom Prison and San Quentin show him empathising with the inmates with songs of “sin and salvation”, often with humour.
Singer and musician Jamie Jupiter, from Muizenberg, will perform as Johnny Cash. Mr Jupiter has admired the music and personality of Cash since childhood, when he bought an LP at a school fête. Over the years, he has refined his portrayal of the legendary musician. He began his career as a guitarist for the cult 1990s band The Honeymoon Suites and, in the 2000s, launched his solo career, showcasing his distinctive voice and stage presence and earning radio play for several of his original songs.
Mr Jupiter will be joined on stage by Jonny Blundell, also from Muizenberg, who serves as the music director and blues guitarist. Multi-instrumentalist and sublimely talented singer Sarah McArthur, from Pinelands, along with double bassist and sound wizard Daniel Franks from Muizenberg, will be performing as part of the cast.
The production is directed by the multi-awarded radio drama director, writer, arts journalist, critic, jazz presenter, and documentary maker, Nigel Vermaas from Hout Bay.
Sin and Salvation – The Story of Johnny Cash will take place at Simon’s Restaurant, Groot Constantia, on Friday, October 17, from 6pm, Tickets can be booked via Quicket.
