DNA analysis has confirmed that the human remains discovered in Kommetjie in June belong to 40-year-old Russell Wood, who was reported missing in April.
Ocean View police spokesperson Captain Nick Spreeth said the body was discovered in June, floating in the Bokramspruit River in Kommetjie by workers clearing bushes.
“The DNA test was positive,” he confirmed.
Mr Wood was reported missing on April 22, 2025, by his brother, Anthony Wood.
“He walked out of the house like he normally did, but when he failed to return that evening, his brother reported him missing the next day,” said Captain Spreeth.
He added that Mr Wood, who suffered from epilepsy, attended Lsan School, a special needs school in Ocean View.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death is ongoing and is being handled by Detective Sergeant Pupuma. Police are still waiting for the post-mortem report.
Ocean View Community Police Forum (CPF) chairperson Rushda Richards said the community had rallied together when Mr Wood was first reported missing.
“When Mr Wood was reported missing, our community sprang into action - we banded together to search far and wide. And even though the heavens opened up and it started pouring, nothing could dampen our spirits or deter us,” she said.
Ms Richards described Mr Wood as “kindness and gentleness personified.”
“I was so proud of everyone, they showed up, rain or shine, because we all knew and loved Russell,” she said.
“It was with heavy hearts that we learned in June we’d found a body. The process had to run its course, and it was only on Thursday, October 23, that forensics confirmed to the family that it was Mr Russell we had discovered back in June on Kommetjie Road.”
She extended her condolences to the family and the community.
“We’ll remember Russell Wood as the gentle giant he was,” said Ms Richards.
“He’ll surely be missed by all who knew him.”
