The City is reportedly considering the use of public open spaces (such as ElginPark) as possible sites for low-income housing.
Refer to their Local Spatial Development Framework (LSDF) for the South Peninsula. As a community, we must firmly oppose any attempts to urbanise these vital green spaces.
They provide not only beauty & biodiversity, but have important recreational and social values, that benefit all residents.
Given the City’s ongoing neglect of many of these areas, it is perhaps time for the community to take proactive ownership and to manage, protect & enhance them, as cherished public assets. Elgin Park, for example, is an ideal site for a Tiny Forest or Miyawaki Forest, a global initiative supported by leading conservation agencies.
To ensure the sustainability of these projects, they should be supported and coordinated through our local Ratepayers Associations
