Charmaine French, Fish Hoek.
After serving the Fish Hoek valley and far south community for more than 28 years, Richard Bevan has reluctantly closed the doors of his Central Shoe & Bag Repair Service shop in Central Road.
I have lost count of the many times bags, belts, dog collars, harnesses, car seat covers and all manner of what-have-you’s -including shoes - were dropped off with the request that Richard would find a way of restoring the item and all would be well.
From behind a mound of items belonging to others with similar needs, this quietly spoken, courteous and humble cobbler would perform near-miracles. Bless him!
Sadly, all attempts to secure new premises and continue to serve the community have been unsuccessful. And yet maybe – just maybe- a reader knows of a perfect spot for this little business to occupy? If not, then alas for us all.
Richard takes with him an ancient craft with all its skills and knowledge that have been hugely appreciated by thousands of people over so many years.
Our wholehearted thanks to Richard Bevan for his extraordinary and countless years of service!
