The upgrade of Kommetjie Road has been delayed due to unforeseen complications on site, and construction will now continue through the builders’ break as the City pushes to finish the project before the end of 2025.
The work, taking place between the intersections with Capri Drive and Wood Road near Masiphumelele, will continue on weekdays from 7.30am to 5.30pm and on Saturdays when required.
The additional lanes being built are expected to ease peak-hour traffic for residents travelling between Kommetjie, Ocean View, Imhoff’s Gift, Heron Park, Masiphumelele and Sunnydale.
Mayoral committee member for urban mobility, Rob Quintas, said the delays were the result of unexpected challenges typical of large road projects.
“First and foremost, I want to thank the residents and road users in the Kommetjie area for their continued patience,” he said.
“We completely understand the frustration caused by the unforeseen delays and the current congestion, particularly during peak periods. All efforts are being made to ensure we can complete the upgrade by the end of December 2025, and we appreciate the communities’ support while we are working during the festive season.”
The City says the contractor has adjusted sequencing and resources to keep the project moving, and that traffic flow interventions will continue during the remaining construction period.
Traffic management and enforcement operations will now be handled by separate units “to prevent any additional congestion” in the coming weeks.
The contractor is currently completing road-layer works, kerbing and asphalt surfacing for the west-bound lane.
If all goes according to plan, these lanes will open in December.
Road markings are scheduled to be completed by December 2025. The temporary closure barricades at Corfu Road and the Food Zone entrance/exit are being removed.
According to the City, the project will improve capacity on the east-bound lanes and at the entry points to Masiphumelele, maintain continuous cycle lanes along Kommetjie Road, and accommodate public transport stops.
So far, a boundary wall has been relocated, underground services have been moved, and resurfacing of the east-bound lanes has been completed.
The west-bound road widening is now being finalised.
The City has urged motorists and pedestrians to stay out of the Kommetjie Road reserve for safety reasons until construction is complete.
