A multi-agency response led to the arrest of two suspects following reports of a mugging on Signal Hill late on Tuesday afternoon, December 23.
According to mayoral committee member for safety and security JP Smith, the City’s Law Enforcement Tourism Unit received information about a robbery on the popular tourist route.
Officers immediately moved to block off known exit routes while teams searched the mountainside. The operation was supported by additional members from the police and South African National Parks (SANParks).
SANParks confirmed it was alerted at about 5:30pm, after the suspects were reported hiding in bushes on Signal Hill. Its Sea, Air and Mountain (SEAM) operators and canine unit were deployed to assist with the search.
The men were located and arrested. They were found in possession of knives and two cellphones they were unable to account for, as well as other suspected stolen property, according to Mr Smith.
He added that although arrests were made, no robbery had yet been formally reported to the police, meaning the suspects currently face charges related to possession of presumed stolen property
"If the victim registers a criminal case at the police station for the mugging, they can then have their property returned, and a criminal charge of robbery can be added. An excellent response by all agencies helped to achieve this outcome, but we need your help to make it a success," he said.
The suspects were handed over to Sea Point police for detention.
Police spokesperson Captain F.C van Wyk confirmed that two suspects, aged 23 and 25, were arrested for possession of presumed stolen property.
"They will make their first court appearance on Monday, December 29 at the Cape Town Magistrates' Court. Investigations continue in order to link them with other cases," he said.
