The release of matric results this week brought relief and excitement to matriculants across the far south, as the Class of 2025 achieved one of the strongest performances on record.
Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube announced that the national matric pass rate reached 88%, the highest level in history, improving on the 2024 rate of 87.3%.
The Western Cape achieved a pass rate of 88.2%, behind KwaZulu-Natal on 90.6%, the Free State on 89.3%, Gauteng on 89.06%, and North West on 88.4%, but ahead of the Northern Cape on 87.7%, Mpumalanga on 86.5%, Limpopo on 86.1%, and the Eastern Cape on 84.1%
“The Class of 2025 delivered the highest matric pass rate and bachelor’s pass rate ever for our province,” Western Cape Education MEC David Maynier said.
“The matric pass rate increased from last year’s record-breaking 86.6% to 88.2%, which is the highest pass rate our province has received since the National Senior Certificate was introduced.”
He congratulated the Class of 2025 on an excellent set of results.

"You have been one of our hardest-working matric classes to date, and you can rightly celebrate your achievements,” Mr Maynier said.
“Your dedication to your studies has set a wonderful example for future classes of matrics.”
In the far south, Masiphumelele High School improved its pass rate from 78.8% to 80%.
Principal Skahle Nhlabathi said she was “very excited” about the results and that the school was now aiming for between 85% and 90% next year. “We are positive we can get it,” she added.
“I want to congratulate our teachers for the work, effort and dedication in assisting the pupils. Nothing can happen without them,” she said.
Fish Hoek High School achieved a 100% pass rate, improving from 99.5% the previous year.
“We are incredibly proud to celebrate our Matric Class of 2025 and their outstanding achievement of a 100% pass rate,” principal Steven Joubert said.
“It’s a testimony of our shared purpose from our parents, Matrics, educators and support staff in achieving academic excellence.”
“We’re also thrilled by the fact that we have a 99.9% pass rate from Grade 8 to Matric, cementing Fish Hoek High School as the leading co-ed school in the southern suburbs,” Mr Joubert said.
“Well done to our Matrics of 2025 for being an inspiration to our 1 080 learners and our incoming Grade 8s, and showcasing our promise to deliver ‘Excellence right on your doorstep’.”
Fish Hoek High School’s top achievers for 2025 are Danielle Downes with a 90.9% aggregate and seven distinctions, Leo Mostert with 90.7% and seven distinctions, and Nina Gibson with 86.7% and six distinctions.

Simon’s Town School recorded a 96.1% pass rate, up from 95.6% last year.
“These results are a testament to the hard work of our pupils and the dedication of our teachers and staff,” acting principal Lucresia Harrison said.
“Thank you for your tireless efforts, your passion for teaching, and for instilling a love of education in every pupil. Your guidance and support have been invaluable.”
She added, “To our supportive parents and the entire Simon’s Town community, this success is a shared victory. Your unwavering belief in our pupils creates the foundation for these outstanding results. Their future is bright, and we can't wait to see the incredible things the Class of 2025 will achieve.”

Ocean View High School improved from 61.5% to 71.7%.
“We anticipated that it would be an increase, but it is mind-blowing that we increased by 10 percent from 61 to 71,” acting principal Andrew Sanders said. “Our target for this year is 80.”
He encouraged parents to continue supporting their children and the school, and thanked the teachers for their hard work.

“The labour of education is hard, but the rewards are joyful and fulfilling. You contribute to the lives of children and give them something that will open doors for them. The sky is the limit. We want to wish them all the best,” he said.
Muizenberg High School improved its pass rate from 85.4% to 90%. Principal Marlene Oliver did not respond to requests for comment by deadline.
