The Fish Hoek Valley Historical Association will host a Historic Fish Hoek Beach Walk on Saturday, January 24, offering residents and visitors a guided look at the area’s rich coastal history.

The walk, which starts at 10am, will cover approximately two kilometres along Simonstown Road, over the Sunnycove railway bridge and back along Jager’s Walk.

According to Sue Maude, curator of the Fish Hoek Valley Museum, the walk will focus on a wide range of historical sites and stories connected to the beachfront.

"Participants will learn about landmarks such as the old pavilion, the Homestead Hotel, Uitkyk, Orano and Bull Pritchard’s Lilliputian Garden, as well as Men’s Bathers, the shark exclusion net and local shipwrecks,” Ms Maude said.

She added that the walk will also explore stories linked to pirates, the whaling industry, Mountain View, Sewe Mense Klip, the Delbridge Quarry and Belvedere Flats

The event is being held to raise much-needed funds for the Fish Hoek Valley Museum.

“We rely entirely on donations from visitors and friends to cover our running costs and to keep the museum open,” she said.

The cost to take part is R100 for Historical Association members and pensioners, R150 per adult, with children under 12 attending free of charge. Booking is essential as numbers are limited.

Bookings can be made by emailing curator.fishhoekvalleymuseum@gmail.com or via WhatsApp on 062 576 6166.
