Fish Hoek police are investigating a case of reckless and negligent driving after a car plunged off Chapman’s Peak Drive on Sunday, January 25.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg said the incident involved a single vehicle.

“The driver lost control of the car and left the road,” Sergeant Twigg said. “They sustained injuries and were taken to a nearby medical facility for treatment. The circumstances surrounding the incident are still under investigation.”

The accident occurred shortly after 9am on the Noordhoek side of the peak.

Video footage shows the car on the rocks below the cliff, with one of the occupants making their way clear of the wreck.

A witness at the scene described what they saw, estimating the car had fallen around 100 metres from the top. “One of the men was on his back, shaking his legs. We were concerned about the fuel leaking from the car,” they said.

The injured man was later airlifted by helicopter to a hospital for treatment.

The road was temporarily closed in both directions, and drivers were advised to use alternative routes until it reopened.

The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness Emergency Medical Services spokesperson, Shimoney Regter, said: “Our rescue teams extracted one patient, who was transported to a nearby hospital for further care. A second individual was assessed and attended to on-site by our team. We thank our EMS personnel for their swift and coordinated response.”

Police are appealing to anyone with information to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or to submit details anonymously through the MySAPS mobile application.
