Just weeks ago, life felt ordinary for 10-year-old Zack Rossouw from Ocean View - school days, swimming, and time with family. Today, his world revolves around hospital wards, medical tests and a battle no child should ever have to face.
Zack’s mother, Gaizly Rossouw, said everything changed after what first seemed like a minor knock to his leg during a swim at his uncle’s house at the end of November.
“At the time, it seemed like a small knock - nothing unusual for a 10-year-old boy,” she said.
But the following Monday morning, she noticed Zack limping.
His knee was swollen, and she took him to Fish Hoek Hospital that day and again the next morning. After X-rays, a doctor delivered news no parent is ever prepared to hear.
“Mom, it looks like a bad infection or cancer,” she said.
By that evening, Zack had been referred to Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, where a whirlwind of tests followed - MRIs, bone scans, chest X-rays and more.
He was admitted to the orthopaedic ward from Tuesday, December 2 to Tuesday, December 9. Two days later, after a biopsy, the diagnosis was confirmed.
Zack has osteosarcoma - a form of cancer.
“Zack is only 10 years old, full of life, love, and courage far beyond his years,” his mother said.
“As his mom, my heart is shattered, but I am holding onto faith as tightly as I can while my little boy begins the hardest journey of his life.”

Ursula Kotelana, communication officer for the Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness at Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, confirmed that Zack is currently receiving treatment.
“Zack Rossouw is an oncology patient at Red Cross receiving treatment for cancer,” she said.
Despite the diagnosis, Ms Rossouw describes her son as a bright light.
She said Zack is a “happy chappy, always smiling, vibrant and bold”, and always ready to help.
He enjoys swimming, loves playing football and riding his bike. What makes him truly special, she said, is his bravery.
"He is so brave and courageous. Always ready to explore.”
However, the reality of cancer treatment has dramatically altered their daily lives.
Zack’s diagnosis in early December has meant frequent hospital visits and admissions. His mother said their routines have been completely upended, with Zack now their first priority every single day.
The family has launched a fundraising campaign to help cover essential costs linked to his treatment.
Ms Rossouw said funds raised will go towards Zack’s nutritional food needs and petrol for the many trips to and from the hospital.
The family is thankful for the support, both financially and emotionally, from the community.
“Thank you for walking this journey with us,” she said.
“Your kindness, prayers, and support give us strength during this incredibly difficult time.”
