The refurbishment and relocation of the historic Muizenberg beach huts is underway, with the project aimed at preserving the iconic structures for the long term.

The Muizenberg Huts Trust says the rebuild period has led to staffing changes because day-to-day operations have paused during construction.

Angela Gorman of the Trust explained that the changes are linked to the City’s refurbishment process and the reduced on-site operational activity.

“The staffing changes are not sudden; they are linked to the City’s refurbishment and relocation of the huts, during which there will be very little day-to-day activity for a period of time,” she said. “As a result, the Trust cannot sustain operational positions during the rebuild phase.”

During construction, the Surfer’s Corner huts are being removed, and the remaining huts are largely inactive.

Without rental activity, the Trust’s primary source of income falls away.

Ms Gorman noted that the organisation relies almost entirely on hut-related income to fund day-to-day staffing. Without active rentals, there is not enough revenue to maintain operational roles while the huts are inactive.

She confirmed that a formal process is being followed with the affected staff, including written notice and payment of all amounts due under their employment arrangements.

Communication remains open regarding potential opportunities once operations resume.

“These changes are linked specifically to the rebuild period,” Ms Gorman said.

“Once the new huts are installed and operational again, the Trust will reassess staffing needs and, where possible, prioritise rehiring.”

While construction is underway, the Trust’s focus shifts from daily management and rentals to oversight, planning and liaison with the City and contractors as the new structures are completed.

Ms Gorman emphasised that the long-term objective of the project is preservation.

“The project itself is aimed at preserving the historic huts long-term. We know the huts mean a great deal to the Muizenberg community, and our intention remains to protect them and keep them accessible for everyone.”
