Residents of the far south will soon have the chance to enjoy live opera right in their own neighbourhood - and it won’t cost a cent.
The City of Cape Town’s Arts and Culture Branch has partnered with the Cape Town Opera Vocal Ensemble to present a series of free community concerts as part of the Opera in Your Neighbourhood programme.
The initiative brings world-class vocal performances out of traditional theatres and into local community venues, making opera more accessible to everyone.
One of the concerts will take place at the Fish Hoek Community Hall on Saturday, February 28, at 12pm.
The Cape Town Opera Vocal Ensemble, made up of 18 performers and led by chorus master Antoinette Huyssen, will present a diverse programme that includes opera, classical favourites, musical theatre, African traditional music and gospel.
Councillor Francine Higham, mayoral committee member for community services and health, said opera is often seen as inaccessible. Still, this initiative is designed to bring the art form directly to communities across the city.
Previous neighbourhood concerts have been met with enthusiastic responses from audiences of all ages, with many residents saying they enjoyed the rare opportunity to experience professional opera singers up close in a relaxed, local setting.
In addition to Fish Hoek, concerts will also take place at the Langa Civic Centre on Thursday, February 26, at 12pm and the Bothasig Community Hall on Friday, February 27, at 6pm.
The concerts are open to all ages and free of charge. Residents who would like to attend are encouraged to RSVP to: ArtsandCulture.GIA@capetown.gov.za
For Fish Hoek residents, it’s a rare opportunity to experience the magic of live opera — right on their doorstep.
