Tears cattery narrowly escaped a fire that started on a vacant nearby property.
After a close call with a fire at The Emma Animal Rescue Society (TEARS) in Kommetjie last month, the Fish Hoek Lions Club will help raise funds to install much-needed fire protection for the society.
Tears marketing manager Wendy Scheepers said the society was regularly threatened by fires and last month, its cattery narrowly escaped a fire that started on a vacant property, covered with alien vegetation, next to the cattery.
“We do have a fire break, but the fire came so close we were forced to evacuate the cattery,” she said.
She said they had evacuated 140 cats and kittens within 40 minutes.
Lions president Brent Proctor said they wanted to help Tears to install JoJo tanks, pumps, hoses, and fire sprinklers and they have called on the community to support the cause.
