John and Gaynor Crowe celebrate their golden wedding anniversary this month, marking 50 years of love and adventure.
They met at a disco at university in the UK in 1969.
“I was immediately drawn to her, and I think she felt the same way,” says John of that first meeting. He had moved from South Africa to the UK with his family in 1957.
On August 3, 1974, they married at the Harrow Registry Office in London and later moved to Jamaica to teach.
They returned to the UK in 1978, but relocated to Zimbabwe in 1982. This was followed by stints in America, Malaysia and Singapore. From 2009 to 2012, they lived in China before returning to Zimbabwe.
In 2016, they settled in Fish Hoek.
John describes Gaynor as “a very unusual person” who is able to connect with everyone.
“She is astute, perceptive, and often the person who gets things going in a social setting. We have always supported each other in work, family, and recreation, and that has strengthened our relationship.”
Gaynor says John’s adventurous spirit rubbed off on her. “It facilitated us working in many parts of the world. In fact, our three children were all born in different parts of the world: Jamaica, Britain and Zimbabwe.”
