An Eastern Cape man charged with the brutal killing of a 29-year-old woman made an appearance in the Ezibeleni Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
Aseza Qakalane, 31, was remanded in police custody and will be back in court for a formal bail application in a week.
Police said the man was arrested in the early hours of Monday morning.
Eastern Cape police spokesperson Captain Yolisa Mgolodela said police responded to a call from a community member in Unathi Mkefa, Ezibeleni.
"The police arrived at the scene around 03:30 and discovered the lifeless body of the victim lying half-naked on a wet bed. The room was upside down, suggesting a violent struggle may have occurred.
"Upon examination, it was confirmed that the victim had died from strangulation. Further investigation revealed that the suspect, who is the brother-in-law of the homestead owner, had been residing with the deceased in an outside room. He was immediately taken into custody on suspicion of murder."
The District Commissioner Major General Rudolph Adolph strongly condemned the scourge of gender based violent crimes prevalent in communities.
