Breakers bring their A-game to BC One battles

This past weekend, the city’s top breakers brought their A-game for a shot at next month’s Red Bull BC One finals. The Cape Town leg of the BC One series took place at The Terrace Rooftop in Kremer Road, Salt River, with regional cyphers also taking place in Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth, leading to the national finals in Johannesburg, on Saturday March 29.

In the B-Girl section Nina “Funky Child” Petersen, 19, from Southfield, delivered an unforgettable performance, blending freestyle energy with technical precision to claim her spot in the finals.

“I’m going into the national finals with a more flexible approach. I used to have sets and would get frustrated if I didn’t hit them perfectly in the moment,” she said.

“This time, I’m going to train more — and more importantly, be present in the moment on the national stage.”

In the B-Boy division, years of dedication to the craft paid off for Charlton “B-Boy Chillo” Conradie, 31, from Lentegeur, who finally achieved success in this competition with a show-stopping mix of power moves and footwork.

“I’ll be training more on my power moves and footwork ahead of the National Finals,” he said, determined to step up his game.
