THE FNB Varsity Shield rugby competition stands as a testament to the vibrant rugby culture within South African universities.
With a history steeped in tradition and a reputation for high-intensity, passionate rugby, the Varsity Shield holds a special place in the hearts of players and fans alike. The competition often serves as a platform where dreams are ignited, and a springboard from which future stars’ careers are often launched.
A Storied Past, a Bright Future
Varsity sport tussles trace back to the early years, and university rugby with its sweat, grit and muscle was, one suspects, a perfect place for ‘jocks’ to impress potential romantic interests.
So it’s rather interesting that the 2025 competition kicks off on Valentine’s Day, don’t you think?
But no, don’t think that university rugby was a glorified flirt session. In South Africa, rugby runs through our veins and it should come as no surprise that rugby would take pride of place in SA varsities’ sporting communities.
Initially, rivalries between institutions like Stellenbosch, UCT, and Wits dominated the landscape. As the sport grew in popularity, a more structured competition was needed, giving rise to the Varsity Cup in 2008 and, subsequently, in 2011, the Varsity Shield.
The Varsity Shield was established to provide a competitive avenue for universities that may not have the same resources or infrastructure as their Varsity Cup counterparts.
A Fiercely Contested Competition
But don’t think of it as an inferior competition; far from it!
The Varsity Shield has evolved into a fiercely contested tournament that serves as a platform displaying the depth of rugby talent across the country.
The Shield’s format, which includes round-robin stages followed by knockouts, ensures that only the most consistent and determined teams rise to the top.
South African university rugby has become renowned for unearthing exceptional rugby players who have gone on to achieve great things in the sport. Many Springboks and professional rugby stars honed their skills and developed their passion for the game within the Varsity rugby ranks.
Players like Bongi Mbonambi, Eben Etzebeth, Lood de Jager, Trevor Nyakane and Handré Pollard, to name but a few, were all forged in the crucible of Varsity Shield competition.
If you take the time to look up the full list, you may be pleasantly surprised … who knows, one of our local Sol Plaatje University’s own Gemmies could one day be pulling the green and gold, or ‘delivery-bike’ turquoise, over his, and you could have been there at the Suzuki Stadium, witnessing the birth of a rugby legend.
I’m just saying, it’s highly possible, simply because the Varsity Shield continues to be a vital scouting ground for professional teams, both domestically and internationally.
Broadening the Sport's Appeal
Another good thing about this competition is that the Varsity Shield also plays a crucial role in the development of rugby at the grassroots level. By providing opportunities for players from diverse backgrounds to compete at a high level, it helps to broaden the sport's appeal and maintains a generous pipeline of talent for the future.
So, looking ahead, as the Varsity Shield continues to grow and evolve, its importance in the South African rugby landscape is only set to increase.
Light up the ‘Gemmie Gees’
Will 2025’s edition unearth new stars? Will new rivalries be ignited? And will the competition’s legacy continue to expand?
As far as I am concerned, with the participation of the Gemmies this year, the answer is “definitely”!
So, rugby fanatics, enthusiasts and fans, head on up to the Suzuki Stadium on Friday afternoon to watch something you won’t experience on your couch at home, running your fingers over a remote or over the screen of your smart device.
Make a point of being there to enjoy a celebration of rugby, which is a testament to the power of sport, and not only that … let’s make a point of showing the other varsities the depth and intensity of Gemmie Gees!
