They call him Razor, tactically sharp, skilled and not afraid to put in the hard tackles.
That about describes the hard-working Ubuntu Football Academy captain and centre midfielder, Solethu Mabhenu, 18, who started off this year’s Bayhill Premier Cup with borrowed boots, finishing with a brand-new pair of soccer cleats and the winners’ trophy.
“The fact that I got to play the final at such a big stage, with a very big crowd and to lead the team out of the tunnel. I feel very privileged to have had this opportunity at such a young age, it is a dream come true,” Mabhenu.
Currently in his third year at Ubuntu, having previously played for Strand Hotspurs and Stellenbosch FC, the young captain is quick to pay tribute to his coaches and teammates following his side’s 2-0 win against Randburg FC, in Monday’s Premier Cup final, at Athlone Stadium.
“It's the first time Ubuntu has won this trophy and I'm very happy to be a part of that,” he said.
“We trusted the coaches' philosophy and we did everything that we were taught in training. We rotated the squad and everyone played a very big role,” he said.
“The lads also really showed up to the occasion, even the younger ones raised their hands and had a very mature behavior on and off the pitch throughout the whole tournament,” he said.
