Masiphumelele Rugby Club kicked off their Top 9 Western Province Rugby Football Union (WPRFU) campaign this past weekend with an away fixture played in tough, challenging conditions against Elsies River United.
The day began on a strong note, with both the Third and Second teams securing well-earned wins. The Third Team edged out Elsies River 26 -15 in a determined performance, while the Second Team kept their cool in a tight affair to win 10 - 5. These victories set the tone for what promised to be a fiercely contested First Team encounter.
In the main game, both sides came out firing, with the score locked at 3-all in the opening 15 minutes. By halftime, the scores were even at 18 -18, a reflection of just how evenly matched the contest had been.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with both teams earning their four-try bonus point. Masi’s attacking flair was on full display with tries from Sinethemba Keke, Yamkela Mangxola, Alex Jekwa, and William Owen, with a penalty added by Monwabo Totsini. However, as the pressure mounted, Masi’s scrum was put under pressure, and the home side took advantage with a late, well-executed try that clinched the win with a final score of 32 - 23.
This Saturday, July 12, Masi travel to Sir Lowry Village to face Sir Lowrians Rugby Club. The Pumas will be looking to bounce back with a much-needed win to stay in contention for the chance of promotion to Super C league.
