Masiphumele Rugby Club endured a challenging afternoon in Somerset West on Saturday, facing Raithby Universals in cold, wet, and muddy conditions that tested players across all three fixtures.
The day began with the Third team encounter, where Raithby made the most of their home advantage, running in five tries to Masi’s single effort. The match ended 31–5, with Masi unable to find their rhythm on the heavy surface.
The Second team then took to the field, delivering a determined performance in the swirling wind and rain. Tries from flanker Kitshini and winger, Ngoloti, along with two conversions and a penalty from Dylan Malander, secured a hard-fought 17–14 victory. Their resilience was a highlight of the day and gave the visiting supporters something to cheer about.
In the headline First team clash, Raithby struck early with a converted try. Masi settled into the contest, with the game largely played between the 22s, the sodden pitch contributing to frequent handling errors and scrums. Just before halftime, Manelisi Mbana crossed the line for Masi to close the gap to 7–5.
The second half saw Masi apply pressure but struggle to turn territory into points. Missed opportunities proved costly as Raithby capitalised on their chances, adding two unanswered tries to seal a 17–5 win.
While it was a tough day for the club overall, lessons were learned and spirits remain high. With three games left in the season, Masi will be looking to bounce back next Saturday, August 16 when they travel to Fisantekraal.
