Fight fans are eagerly awaiting Insane Boxing’s top-level event, which will take place on Friday August 25 at the CPUT Campus in Bellville.
Dubbed Cape Town Rise, the event will shine the spotlight on local talent once again and allow new fighters to show off their skills amid a high level of competition.
“There is a multitude of exciting talent here but it’s been many years since Cape Town boxing has had the funds to showcase its talents on a large scale, leaving local boxers often fighting on small stages and in obscure promotions,” said Insane Boxing president Savva Savvas.
“This event is massive for the boxers because it gives them the spotlight they deserve.”
At the centre of the event are two men each with a story that embodies the nature of second chances, Abdul-Aziz Kunert the headliner, and Mzuvukile Magwaca in the co-main.
Kunert will headline the event as a challenger for Zolisa Batyi’s SA Featherweight title.
Kunert is a name that was once associated with gangs and a prison stint as a result. But on August 25 it will represent transformation and be associated with sporting greats of the squared circle.
The title he is fighting for has been wrapped around the weight of boxing greats like Jackie “The Pressure Cooker“ Gunguluza, Takalani Ndlovu, and Malcom Klassen among others.
Boxing has always been one of those sports with redemption stories and this is one of those stories where Kunert channelled his past aggression into a legitimate channel. Kunert has a 11-2 record and this is his second crack at the SA title after a split-decision loss two years ago.
And then in the co-main event is Mzuvukile Magwaza whose story of being shot during a robbery set chills through many boxing lovers as at the time, he was among the best in the country.
The shooting cut short his promising career and we wrote his obituary as far as boxing is concerned.
However, here we are in 2023 and he will be looking to leave the ring as WC champ when he takes on Nasiphi Mdlangazi in the junior featherweight. This will be his third fight after making a comeback for the former IBF Inter-continental champion.
On the same card, WC middleweight champ Dillon Solomon is also in action against Alex Kabangu. In the junior middleweight, one of the most exciting boxing prospects in the country Emile Brits will also be in action against Nicholas Jooga.
