Thembinkosi Lorch has been named Wydad Casablanca’s Player of the Month for March 2025, highlighting a remarkable turnaround in the South African star's career since his January move to Morocco.
The 31-year-old playmaker, who joined Wydad AC from Mamelodi Sundowns, has quickly become a key figure in the team, impressing fans and coaches alike with his creativity, flair, and determination.
Lorch, affectionately known as ‘Nyoso’, arrived at Wydad in search of regular game time after struggling to make an impact at Sundowns following his high-profile transfer from Orlando Pirates in early 2024.
With limited minutes in a star-studded Sundowns squad, the move to Wydad presented a fresh start and Lorch has taken full advantage.
In his first three months at the Moroccan giants, Lorch has featured in eight matches across all competitions, scoring one goal and providing a dynamic presence in attack. His standout performances in March, where he played three matches and scored once, earned him the prestigious Player of the Month award.
Lorch’s resurgence has provided Wydad with a much needed spark amid an inconsistent season. Despite the club’s recent elimination from the Throne Cup at the hands of MA Tétouan, and a dip in form that has increased pressure on head coach Rulani Mokwena, Lorch has remained one of the few bright spots.
Mokwena, who signed Lorch for Sundowns before taking the reins at Wydad at the start of the 2024/25 season, has collected 43 points in 25 league matches. The Soweto-born coach’s side currently sits third in the Botola Pro 1 standings, with 11 wins, 10 draws, and four losses. With seven league matches remaining, Wydad will be aiming for a top-two finish to secure CAF Champions League qualification and possibly save Mokwena's job.
