Following their Soweto Derby defeat to Orlando Pirates with the last kick of the game over the weekend, Kaizer Chiefs would have been hoping for a bounce-back Betway Premiership win against AmaZulu on Tuesday, but more dropped points was the result.
Chiefs drew 2-2 with AmaZulu in front of a smattering of fans at the FNB Stadium, which was packed a couple of days prior which witnessed the side go down 1-0 to their perennial foes.
Indeed, the loss to Pirates was a harsh one as they competed evenly with the better-favoured Pirates for over 90 minutes.
A last-minute penalty, indeed would be the difference between the sides and a harsh result for Chiefs.
Against AmaZulu, however, it was anything but a cagey affair and instead a full out thriller.
Both sides could have won the match, but Chiefs started like a team possessed with two rip-roaring shots in succession inside the first minute which set the tone for the encounter.
Such was the intensity of the match that both sides struck the respective uprights during their onslaughts, although for Chiefs it led to their second goal moments later.
It’s also not often that a side concedes two own goals during a football match at any level, but that’s exactly what transpired for AmaZulu with Ramahlwe Mphahlele and Richard Ofori the guilty parties as no Chiefs player appeared on the scoresheet.
It would be harsh, but fair to say that Chiefs dominated in the clash with 19 shots at goal to the 12 of AmaZulu. AmaKhosi also shaded possession with 55% of the ball.
Ultimately though, it was another frustrating draw for Chiefs and their fourth of their 16 matches this season. They do find themselves in fifth, which is an improvement on their 10th place finish last term.
The mighty AmaKhosi though, are eight points behind Pirates in second and have played four more games than the Buccaneers. Clearly not title contenders then, Chiefs could still have a shot of finishing third, but if they don’t will their management at Naturena be satisfied?
It’s a question worth pondering, but it’s difficult to predict just how the Soweto Giants will react.
