Thousands of runners from across the city and beyond took to the streets at the weekend. Race weekend got under way with the Two Oceans 56km Ultra Marathon on Saturday, which took athletes from Newlands to Fish Hoek, up and over Chapman’s Peak, with a last big climb over Constantia Nek, before finishing off at the University of Cape Town. Half marathon enthusiasts got their chance the following day, on Sunday, with approximately 29 000 runners taking part in the ultra and half-marathon events. Gerda Steyn won the women’s 56km race and Givemore Mudzinganyama landed the top spot in the men’s race. Mbuleli Mathanga beat Elroy Gelant to take the men’s half marathon while former British world duathlon champion, Emma Pallant, gave her all to hold off Ethiopian Bekelech Wariyo by five seconds to win the women’s race.
