After a two-year pause from boxing since the Covid-19 pandemic, Fish Hoek’s rising star, Sikelela Xatasi has his gloves laced up for a shot at the vacant Western Cape junior lightweight provincial belt.
Xatasi made his return with a bang eight months ago with a win against Luvuyo Mvula in Ottery, in December, followed by technical knockout wins against Sandiso Nhlapo and Loyiso Masala in April and June, earlier this year, respectively.
Fighting out of Southpaw Boxing Club, Xatasi is unbeaten in five professional bouts.
On Monday afternoon, August 26, he passed the pre-fight medical test. He will be competing for the provincial championship belt against another unbeaten fighter, Mava Sitoto.
Hailing out of Philippi, Sitoto is no stranger to adversity. He stumbled upon the punching bag while accompanying his older brother to the boxing gym.
He made two boxing statements in March and June, comfortably winning on points against Mvula in Ottery and Ulemu Banda in Salt River, respectively.
With Sitoto being an orthodox fighter and Xatasi a southpaw boxer, the difference in styles will make for an interesting match on Friday, August 30.
They are the main supporting bout to the SA Women’s featherweight championship fight between Ntombokuqala Tolashe from Khayelitsha and Matshidiso Mokebisi from Gauteng.
Another big fight of the night will be for the vacant cruiserweight World Boxing Federation’s championship belt between Sandiso Kota from Dunoon and Amador Kalonji from DRC.
