Over recent weeks, South African National Parks (SANParks) has observed a troubling surge in armed robbery incidents within the beloved recreational areas of Lions Head and Signal Hill, prompting serious concerns about the safety of those who frequent these natural treasures.
To combat this alarming trend, SANParks, in collaboration with the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Camps Bay Community Improvement District (CID), has initiated a series of rigorous operations aimed at enhancing security across popular hiking routes, namely Lions Head, Signal Hill, Pipe Track, and The Glen.
These proactive measures involve increased patrols and intelligence-led interventions, as well as coordinated efforts to apprehend those responsible for these crimes.
In a bid to safeguard visitors, SANParks has also published comprehensive safety guidelines to ensure that adventurers can explore the beauty of the park without compromising their well-being.
The guidelines emphasise the importance of hiking and cycling in groups of four or more, reinforcing the idea that there is safety in numbers, and they are as follows:
Hiking during daylight hours
Visitors are encouraged to enjoy the park’s trails during daylight hours, ideally from sunrise to sunset.
Evening hikes, while tempting for the adventurous spirit, pose significant risks, particularly in the event of injuries, where reaching for help in the dark can be incredibly challenging.
Proper attire for hiking
Proper attire is another crucial aspect of hiking safety. Hikers should ensure they wear appropriate clothing and footwear suitable for changing weather conditions, thereby reducing the risk of injury and discomfort during their outings.
Planning and communication
Safety also requires careful planning before heading out.
Hikers should inform someone of their departure time, intended route, and expected return, acting as a precautionary measure should anything go amiss.
Additionally, visitors are encouraged to utilise freely available mobile applications designed to track movements for added security.

Preparing for emergencies further extends to ensuring that mobile phones are fully charged before to embarking on a hike, enabling the ability to make emergency calls if necessary.
